- Abstract
- The writing attempts to analyze how to recompose femininity by the discourse of woman’s magazine 『Yeowon』. The magazine, which settled down as the first woman’s magazine in the 1950∼60s, exhibited significant impact on Korean middle-class women during the time, which seems evident in its being entitled ‘the confidant of ladies’. This paper will analyze the attempt to make gendered hierarchy between nations that was actualized between western culture and Korean culture, focused on ‘YoryuHyonsangMunYe’(1956∼1970), the new women writer contest of this magazine. In particular, I will scrutinize how discourses are constituted based on the concept of scientific systemizing of daily life, and ‘bildung’. I will compare ‘YoryuHyonsangMunYe’ with Kim Agnes Davis, 『I am the wife of a Korea』(published serially for ten months by the translation of Tae Jun Yang from June 1957∼March 1958. Published as a separate book by Yeowon in December 1959.). This book is an autobiographical writing of western women who married with Korean man. The discourse about this book reveal how to recompose femininity between women’s sentimentalism and the concept of scientific. Through this analysis, we can see that the competition of discourses recompose the structure of feeling which called women‘s sentimentalism into shame culture.
