Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the evolution process and adoptive preconditions of cell production systems with the case study of Canon. From the analysis, we find that a cell production system emerged as an evolutionary pattern from the Toyota production system(TPS). As a result, it has similarity with TPS in that the two systems emphasize ultimate reduction of wastes although the former does not use belt conveyers and the latter does. As to the evolution patterns of cell production systems, there is no optimally effective single system, but a firm needs to develop its own effective system considering its environmental factors. As to the adoptive preconditions of cell production systems, this paper suggests the following preconditions. A cell production system can be effectively adopted for those products where the number of parts are intermediate-level and the market demand is unpredictable and varying. In addition, a Just-In-Time supply system and performance-based compensation systems can be effective for a cell production system.
