고전산문 연구와 교육의 전망

Abstract

지금까지 이루어진 연구의 성과는 주로 작품에 대한 문헌학적 접근, 작가에 대한 탐구, 배경으로서의 역사 사회적인 접근, 외국문학과의 비교 연구 등이 그 주류를 이루었다. 이는 웰렉과 워렌이 말한 바 비본질적 연구에 속하는 것으로 현대문학 연구의 경향을 따른 것이라고 할 수 있다. 초기부터 이루어진 이러한 경향은 지금까지도 일관되어 지속되고 있다고 할 수 있다. 연구의 방향이 이러하기 때문에 당연히 교육도 그러한 범위 속에서 이루어졌다. 작가의 생애나 작품을 가능하게 했던 사회 구조의 탐색이 고전문학 교육의 현장에서 논의되는 주요 담론인 것이다. 문학의 본질적 연구는 작품의 구조와 해석에 관한 것이라고 할 수 있다. 앞에서 말한 작가나 사회, 사상에 대한 탐구는 문학 자체의 연구를 위한 기초 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 정합성을 탐구하고 교육하는 것이 문학 연구와 교육을 완성한다고 할 수 있지만, 이는 그렇게 쉬운 작업이 아니다. 그래서 기반 연구와 이를 바탕으로 한 본질적 연구와 교육은 바람직한 모습으로 완결되었다고 할 수 없다. 바꾸어 말하면 문학 본연의 연구와 교육 방식은 확립되지 않았다고 할 수 있는 것이다. 이런 이유는 문학이 기본적으로 인간의 상상력과 관련되는 예술의 영역이고, 따라서 이를 대상으로 하는 연구와 교육은 사회 현상이나 제도를 대상으로 하는 사회과학적 방법과는 구별되어야 한다는 점을 간과한 데 있다고 할 것이다. 그래서 항상 사회과학적 방법에 기대어 문학 현상을 설명하고 교육하고자 했던 것이다. 이러한 점에서 문학의 본질을 회복하는 연구와 교육이 절실하다고 할 수 있다. 문학의 외연을 확대하는 작업은 이러한 바탕 위에서 실용적인 것과 접목하는 방식으로 이루어질 것으로 본다. 다양한 접근과 해석은 예술인 문학이 본래 추구한 바이기 때문에 쉽게 상상력과 관련되는 문화 콘텐츠로의 전환이 이루어질 수 있는 것이다.

Achievements of studies have been mainly made through approaches to the literatures, by exploring authors, with historical and sociological approaches to the backgrounds of the works and comparative analysis with foreign literature. These approaches and methods are extrinsic study Wellek and Warren described. Exploring the life of an author and studying social structure at his age has been essential topics in the field of studying and educating literature. These have been unquestionable methods from the beginning of study on contemporary literature. Intrinsic approach means study on structure and interpretations of a literature. Exploring into author’s life, thoughts and social backgrounds contribute to providing basic tools for studying literature itself. Exploring, inquiring and educating coherences may accomplish the study and education on literature but this is not easy task. Thus, intrinsic study and educating its result with help from extrinsic study has not been set up yet. In other words, no idealistic way of studying and educating literature has been established. This is the reason. We have overlooked the fact that the literature is one of the arts related with humans’ imaginations and therefore, we must differentiate the tools for studying literature from the methods of social sciences which focuses on social phenomena and systems. The achievements of studies are made through the literary approach, by exploring authors, with historical and sociological approach and comparative study with foregoing literatures. We have studied literature through the method of social science and we need to find the way of study and education restoring literature itself. Enlarging the extension of literature may be accomplished by connecting practical ones with these fundamentals. Various approaches and interpretations are the objects of literature, one of arts. And it will be easily converted into cultural contents related with imaginations.
