- Abstract
- This study is to give a summary on the recent situation that universities in South Korea start to put more efforts on writing education and to suggest the direction for it to pursue laying stress on current problems. My arguments are classified by topics as following: characteristics and contents of course, teaching method, and the constitution and administration of education.
First above all, I examine the causes of a low level of writing ability throughout South Korean society revealing general problems and addressing my view points. Those causes could be the lack of knowledge of spoken and written language, a sense of inferiority, deficient Korean education, and insufficiency of study. The following are discussed as solutions for them: the removal of language functionalism, education mainly concerned about educatee's capability, the improvement of Korean language test and its practical application, or the overall background for improving writing ability. To cultivate the basis for the improvement of writing ability, a standard for a model writing should be set, and training for professional educators should be accompanied improving secondary Korean education.
College writing education should mainly concentrate on the development of argument beyond the level of study while the characteristics and contents of a course are developing the power of thought and expression together. It also should be integrated with reading education as speaking and listening activities are effectively used.
Methods for argumentative writing education must be practices to develop practical abilities, and simultaneously activities for setting thesis and searching data should be considered significant. Group work is strongly recommended for this and the use of assistant teacher is necessary. Writing a narrative of the experienced is a good way to estimate each student's writing ability. A summary written in the process of collecting data should be also evaluated and the courses might be taken as pass-fail.
For the reasonable operation of writing courses, a special department is needed and it should be placed above each individual department. Professors in this department should be exclusively responsible for and committed to it only and their writing ability should be well prepared.
