플라톤 체육의 정치성: 국가』와『법률』 을 중심으로

Abstract

오늘날 정치학의 연구대상은 주로 국가적인 차원에서 다루어지는 경향을 띠어왔기 때문에 인간 삶에 보다 직접적인 개인적 수준의 대상들에 대한 연구로는 이어지지 못했다. 따라서 이 글은 개인적 수준의 연구대상들에 대한 연구를 통해 그러한 연구대상이 어떻게 국가적인 차원의 문제들에 연계되는지를 설명하고자 하였다. 그래서 이 글은 국민들의 일상적인 삶 속에서, 가장 흔하게 접할 수 있는 체육(gymnastike) 일반을 연구 대상으로 삼아, 그것이 얼마나 정치적이며, 국가적인 차원의 연구대상들과 연계되는지를 드러내고자 하였다. 이 글이 시험적 연구라는 점에서 체육에 관한 아마도 최초의 연구라 할 수 있는, 『국가』와『법률』에 나타난 플라톤의 체육을 연구대상으로 하였다. 그 결과 플라톤의 체육은 첫째, 각개인들로 하여금, 개인적 건강의 획득 나아가 절제와 용기 등 덕의 함양으로 나아가게 한다. 둘째, 개인들로 하여금 체육장 또는 병영생활에서의 공동식사를 통해 정치토론을 체득하게 하며 나아가 민회와 같은 정치체제의 운영에 참여하게 함으로써, 공적 영역의 시민으로 변화하게 만든다. 마지막으로 체육은 시민들로 하여금 정치토론에의 참여뿐만 아니라 전사로서 전쟁에 참여할 수 있게 함으로써, 국가의 번영과 안전에 직접적으로 연계시킨다는 것을 밝혀내었다.

It would seem that, to date, there has been minimal research regarding a logical explanation on the subjects in connection with both everyday life and the political life of the individuals. With this gap in the literature in mind, this paper aims to reveal the political implications of Plato`s gymnastic education, focusing on his two major works-Republic and Laws. This paper will address the communication and relationship between the private activities of the individuals and the public issues. In this paper, This paper will draw the following three political implications from gymnastic education in Plato`s thoughts. Firstly, gymnastic education in Plato`s thoughts helps the individuals achieve well-being and virtues, such as courage, wisdom, moderation and justice. Secondly, it leads the individuals to learn how to discourse about the political things, and to participate in organizations and operations of the body politic, such as the assembly. In so doing, the individuals become the citizen. Lastly, it turns the individuals to warriors so that they can defense and guarantee their state security on their own.
