- Abstract
- This study analyse the current situation of the multicultural music education in Japan. For this study, I analysed the music textbooks , Ongakuno Okurimono, which are currently used at the elementary and middle schools in Japan.
Although many folk songs are included in the textbooks for the first, second and forth grades of the elementary school, these are not indicated to teach the multicultural music education. These folksongs are rather used to teach the musical constructional elements to students. However, in the textbooks for the third, forth and sixth grades of elementary school, several special sections related to the world music or multicultural music education can be found. These are focused on the teaching the multicultural music education for students.
In the middle school, the multicultural music education is completed with special themes at each grade. Each theme emphasis 'the comparative study' between several different musical cultures. Throughout the themes at each grade, it is much easier for students to listen to the various musical genres of various nations by comparative purpose. In this way, the authentic characteristics can be found more easily. One more important positive characteristics of Japanese multicultural music education are that more number of publication on this subject are being published at present. This also helps to develop the multicultural music education in Japan. In addition to this, foreign students or foreign volunteer are arranged to teach their musical cultures in schools. This is also very good method to teach students various musical cultures. Such practical teaching methods are very important to develop multicultural music education and it should be expanded in Korea as well.
