- Abstract
- This study has two aims at large. One is to argue that Parsons' functionalism is the theoretical framework which, unlike the major criticisms from the conflict theory, is capable of analyzing social conflict as well as social order. The other is to address that Yong Shin Park's critical dis-course on Korean modernity has been manifestly or latently built upon Parsons' theories of action and social system. In Park's view, the cultural tradition of familism rooted in Confucianism can be defined in terms of par-ticularism, which is still located deeply in the minds and hearts of the mod-ern Korean people. On the one hand, familism in the subsystem of latent pattern maintenance has contributed to the rapid economic growth. On the other, it put the great limit on achieving the universals of modernity similar to those of the West. In recent, Park has emphasized the importance of the communitarian idea and praxis to overcoming the particularistic familism.
