모성신화, 여성의 또 다른 억압 기제 : 일제 강점기 문학에 나타난 모성 담론의 한계

Abstract

본 논문의 일차 목적은 일제 강점기의 남성 작가들의 작품에서 민족이라는 이름으로 여성에게 모성신화를 강요하는 모성 이데올로기의 양상을 살펴보는 데 있다. 즉 이태준을 비롯한 남성 작가들이 ‘오늘의 훌륭한 어머니’를 구체적으로 어떻게 그리고 있는가, 그리고 이 과정에서 모성 이데올로기가 어떻게 스며들어 있는가, 또 어떤 이유에서 모성신화를 재생산하고 있는가에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 더 나아가 이를 바탕으로 모성신화가 일제의 동화 이데올로기에 동조하고 있는 측면을 드러내고 지배 집단의 이데올로기에 악용되는 과정을 살펴봄으로써 모성신화의 허위성을 드러내는 것이 본 논문의 궁극적인 목적이다. 나도향의 『어머니』, 이태준의 『성모』, 채만식의 『여인전기』 등은 일제 강점기의 어려운 시대를 극복하기 위해서 모성이라는 이름으로 여성의 희생을 미화이며, 가부장제의 공고화에 기여하는 모성신화의 문학적 재생산에 다름 아니다. 또한 현모양처가 구국 전사를 양육하는 ‘민족의 어머니’로 모양만 바뀌었을 뿐 여성의 영역은 가정이며 여성의 정체성은 아이의 양육을 통해서만 획득되어야 한다는 모성 이데올로기의 또 다른 포장에 지나지 않는다. 당대 여성 작가들의 작품에서 생생하게 포착되는 어머니의 고달픈 체험과 비교하여 보면 이들 작품에서 그려지는 현모양처가 여성에게 덧씌워진 허위적인 여성상이라는 점은 자명해진다.

The first purpose of this thesis is to examine the aspect of motherhood ideology which was forced to women in the name of nation among male writer's works during Japanese occupation period. This thesis intends to clarify how the male writers including Lee, Tae-Jun concretely describe the image of 'present respectable mother' and in this process, how the motherhood ideology is permeated and why the motherhood myth is reproduced. Evenmore, this thesis is going to reveal the falsehood of motherhood myth by looking into the process in which holy mother myth follows the Japanese assimilation ideology and it is abused by the ideology of the ruling class. Na, Do-Hyang's Mother, Lee, Tae-Jun's Holy Mother, Chae, Man-Sik's Women's Biography show the literary reproduction of motherhood ideology which embellishes the sacrifices of women in the name of motherhood to overcome the national ordeal in the Japanese occupation period and contributes to strengthen the patriarchy. Also, the realm of women is still confined to home and the women's identity is obtained only through the nursing, which is no more than motherhood ideology, though the image of 'wise mother and good wife' is changed into that of 'nation's mother' who brings up patriotic combatant. Compared with the weary experience of mother lively presented in the works of contemporary female writer, the fact that the image of 'wise mother and good wife' in these works is the fictitious image of women becomes clear.
