세계는 평평한가? : 감염병 시대의 포스트휴먼 유물론 소고

Abstract

코로나-19 바이러스를 비롯해 기후변화로 인한 재난은 인간과 물질, 인간과 자연의 관계를 근본적으로 다시 생각하게 한다. 코로나 감염병과 기후 위기의 지구적 확산이 자본주의적 생활양식에서 비롯된 우리 시대의 가공할만한 팬데믹이라는 데에는 이견의 여지가 없다. 이러한 점들에 착안하여 이 논문은 인간과 물질을 수평적으로 바라보려는 포스트휴머니즘 시대의 유물론들, 명칭과 지향점에는 다소 차이가 있지만 포스트휴먼 유물론으로 묶어도 좋을 신유물론, 생기론적 유물론, 사물이론, 객체지향존재론 등을 관통하는 핵심 주제인 평평한 존재론에 대해 살펴보려고 한다. 이를 위해 물질을 부정적으로 바라본 물질혐오의 전통을 먼저 개괄한 뒤에, 그것을 넘어서기 위한 이론적 시도로서 라투르, 데란다, 브라이언트 등이 개진한 평평한 존재론은 어떤 특징을 지니는지 알아본다. 그리고 평평한 존재론이 과연 어떠한 식으로 세계의 변화에 관해 주장하는지, 혹은 그 반대로 그러한 존재론적 기획들이 현실을 강화하는 것은 아닌지 검토한다. 이러한 접근을 통해 유물론의 새로운 가능성과 관련해 다양하게 개진되고 있는 최근 포스트휴먼 이론의 정치학에 대해 비판적으로 생각해보는 기회를 갖고자 한다.

Unprecedented disasters have urged us to reconsider the relationships between man and matter, between man and nature. There seems no objection to the fact that the global spread of the pandemic and climate crisis derive from the capitalist way of life. Flat ontology is a posthumanist thesis that puts humans on the same plane as matter and nonhumans. This paper discusses the significance and limits of flat ontology that runs through posthuman materialisms including new materialisms and object-oriented ontology. The discussion starts with the humanist tradition of a deep mistrust of matter and the main tenets of flat ontology Latour, DeLanda, and Bryant have argued against it. Their theories, while different from one another, similarly insist on changing the world in terms of the ontological equality or symmetry of entities existing in the world. Analyzing those interrelated approaches critically intervenes in their arguments and examines if flat ontology may have complicit relationships with reality and contribute to the reterritorialization of capitalism. The politics of the posthuman projects to reorient materalism could be evaluated through this study.
