Abstract
Objective: This study was to investigate materialistic values and anti-consumption behavior in college students in late adolescence to explore ways to lead them to happiness. Methods: 431 were included in the analysis. Data analyses were conducted using SPSS 22.0, AMOS 21.0 and frequencies and other descriptive statistics, reliability and correlation analyses and testing the measurement model, performing path analysis to examine direct-indirect effects, and performing bootstrapping to test mediation effects. Results: First, The results showed that the revised final model adequately explained the path models. Happiness was directly influenced by self-esteem, parent–child communication, anti-consumption, parents’ parenting and materialism. Second, In case the results on mediating effects, affection, reasonable explanations and self-esteem increased happiness via materialism, while abusive decreased happiness. Parents’ supervision and self-esteem increased happiness via anti-consumption, while materialism decreased happiness. self-esteem influenced happiness via materialism and then anti-consumption, indicating two mediating paths. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that positive parenting, open communication, self-esteem influence the materialism, anti-consumption, and happiness. It was shown that the model with causal paths that explain happiness as the final outcome of variables via materialism and anti-consumption as mediators has adequate explanatory power.
