비판이론의 과제로서 차이를 이해하기

Abstract

이 글은 ‘차이 인정의 요구’를 비판이론이 직면하는 도전으로 받아들이며, 차이 이해하기를 비판이론의 과제로 제시한다. 비트겐슈타인의 “프레이저의 황금가지 에 관한 소견들”을 중심으로, 보편성과 상대성의 사이에서 문화 상호간 이해를 위한 길을 모색한다. 그의 ‘통찰적 묘사’의 방법이 단지 공통된 것만이 아니라 차이를 보여주는 비교의 방법으로서, 곧 ‘낯섬’을 다루는 방법으로서 제시된다. ‘통찰적 묘사’는 새로운 정보를 발견하거나 가설을 발전시키는 식의 이른바 경험적인 설명 방식과는 다른 표현 도구이다. 이것은 어떤 영역의 특징적 측면을 강조하여 보여주거나, 중립적이라기보다는 어떤 목적에 맞추어서 그 목적에 적합한 비교를 가능하게 해주는 목적 의존적인 방법이다. 가설을세워 설명하려는 프레이저의 시도는 이해에 무감각한 것으로 적절하게 비판되며, 풍부한 문화적 감수성을 갖추고 이해되는 타자의 이야기는 설명되는 것이 아니라 우리를 우리 삶의 방식에 대한 비판적 성찰로 이끈다. 결론적으로 이 글은 비판의 장소로서 구체적인 맥락으로 전환하고자 하는 시도들에 동참하며, 행위자들의 자기 변형적 능력에 기대어 비판이 변형 능력을 소유한 행위자들에게 어떠한 기여를 할 수 있는지 논의한다.

Taking the demand for the recognition of differences as imminent challenges with which critical theory is faced, this essay presents ‘understanding the differences’ as a task of critical theory. Based on Wittgenstein’s “Remarks on Frazer’s Golden Bough”, it seeks a path to intercultural understanding without being stuck between universality and relativity. Wittgenstein’s ‘perspicuous presentation’ is suggested as the comparative method illustrating the differences as well as the commonalities, as a way of dealing with ‘the strangeness.’ ‘Perspicuous presentation’ is an illustrative device different from the socalled empirical accounts discovering new information or developing hypotheses. This is a purposedependent method that highlights the characteristic aspects of some areas or enables a comparison proper to certain purposes rather than being neutral. Fraser’s attempt to hypothesize and explain anything is aptly criticized as insensitive to understanding meanings of other cultures, and the stories of others understood with a rich cultural sensitivity lead us to a kind of critical reflection on our forms of life rather than not being explained. In conclusion, this article joins with the attempts to turn to specific contexts as a place of critique, discussing how critiques can contribute to actors with transformative capabilities, relying on actors’ selftransformative abilities.
