- Abstract
- The number of students who are learning second foreign languages like French or German is dramatically reduced recently in our country. In this situation, we must do something to urge the students into learning. This paper is based rightly on the research of a new method of teaching foreign languages especially French or German. The new method is called the mentor program, originated from the myth of Odyssey of Homer. This program is introduced into the course of general studies at Sookmyung Women’s University in 2004. It is composed of a mentor- professor and 8 or 10 student-mentees. The result is generally very productive in a sense that this program can be applied to resolve many problems caused by the actual system of universities where a certain number of divisions are grouped. Today we can see many problems caused in this system of agglomerated divisions. For example, some divisions like French or German languages are suffering from lack of students, and others from overcrowd applicants. Both produce problems in teaching and learning. We have opened one class of mentor program over the presentation of French culture, and we have seen a good symptom showing that students can be motivated to learn the language by this mentor program.
