Abstract
During the years when Pyeong-yang served as the capital of Goguryeo, the royal tombs were built with smaller mounds and with few additional facilities. This change suggests that the royal tomb system of Goguryeo declined during this period while it was organized and rearranged during the years when Guknae was the capital of Goguryeo. There are several reasons for this decline. First of all, the fashion of light funeral convention in China affected the system of Goguryeo, making the size of the mounds smaller and eventually bringing about the decline of the royal tomb system. This can be explained by the fact that Goguryeo had vigorous exchanges with China during this time. Secondly, people did not put as much importance on the tombs as they did in the past. Since the tombs did not function as the places where the ancestral rites were mainly held during this period, people did not feel the necessity to build huge tombs. Finally, the royal tomb system declined because the change in the afterlife view and the spiritual viewpoint prevented people from viewing tombs as the shelter of the dead.
