- Abstract
- Baekje, Goguryo and Silla handed over various Buddhist culture to Japan since 6th century. The Three Countries sent monks and handed over Buddhist books, sculptures, things, temple buildings and other various cultures. These cultural things much influenced the progress of Japanese Buddhism. Japan received these from one country or two countries at same time. Horyuji temple and some temples showed this. Japan tried to make their own cultural progress.
In 7th century, Japan dispatch envoys to Sui and Tang. With this, Japan received Chinese Buddhism directly instead of Korean route. But Korean Buddhism still continuously influenced Japanese Buddhism. So Japanese Buddhism had several receiving routes.
After Silla unified Baekjae and Goguryo. the remarkable change was that Silla handed over both Buddhist culture and Buddhist thought. Japanese monks went to Silla to learn Buddhist thought. And they went back to Japan, they rose to leader position. So the influence of Silla Buddhism was maintained.
In 8th century Japan Buddhism made many copies of Buddhist book scrolls. And most of them was came from Silla. Much parts of Wonhyo' hooks and many Silla monks' books introduced Japan. and those books made important foundation to the progress of Japanese Buddhist thought. So Silla Buddhism influenced Japan as before. In 9th century, Japan received Sill a Buddhism as before. On the other hand, the effort of making Japanese' own thought obtained remarkable results.
