완판 <소대성전>의 변모 양상과 의미

Abstract

<소대성전>은 고소설 중에서 이른 시기에 생성되어 활발하게 유통된 작품이고, 이본의 수도 상당히 많다. 그러나 그동안의 연구에서 이본에 대한 이해와 선본에 대한 탐색이 철저하게 이루어지지 못한 채, 연구와 교육에서 완판 43장본을 대표적인 작품으로 인정하는 관행이 지속되었다. 이 논문에서는 그동안 제대로 검토되지 못했던 완판 40장본, 34장본을 포함하여 완판 <소대성전> 4종을 치밀하게 비교하여 이본 사이의 관계를 정리했다. 그 결과 현재는 전해지지 않는 40장․34장본의 선행본이 존재했을 것으로 추정했고, 이 공동모본을 축약하는 과정에서 40장본과 34장본이 출현했으며, 34장본을 번각 및 개각하여 36장본이 나타났고, 34장본과 36장본을 모두 참조하여 43장본이 마지막으로 생성되었음을 알 수 있었다. 완판 <소대성전> 이본 비교를 통하여 현재 대표적인 작품으로 인정받고 있는 43장본은 완판본 내에서 선본의 위치를 차지할 수 없고, 34장본에서 36장본을 거쳐 43장본으로 변모해 가는 과정을 인식해야 하며, 40장본을 적극적으로 활용해야만 완판 <소대성전>에 대한 올바른 이해에 도달할 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 따라서 완판 <소대성전>에 한정해서 본다면, 당장은 완판 교합본이 필요하다고 생각했다. 그러나 <소대성전> 전체로 범위를 확대한다면, 완판본은 방각본이라는 기본적인 속성상 교합본을 만든다고 하더라도 선본의 역할을 하지 못할 가능성이 높다. 따라서 향후 <소대성전> 연구에서는 많은 필사본들 가운데 원본에 더 가까운 이본을 가려내는 작업이 요구된다고 하겠다.

Sodaesong-jeon is an early and actively circulated Korean classic novel, and the number of version is quite large. However, the practice of recognizing Jeonju edition 43-leaf version as a representative work continued in research and education, without thoroughly understanding and searching for version in advance researches. In this paper, we carefully compared four types of jeonju edition Sodaesong-jeon, including jeonju edition 40-leaf version and 34-leaf version, which have not been properly reviewed, As a result, we estimated that a pre-existing copy of the 40-leaf version and 34-leaf version existed. In the process of abbreviating this common Mobon, 40-leaf version and 34-leaf version appeared. 36-leaf version appeared in the duplication and remake of the 34-leaf version, and 40-leaf version created referring to both 34 and 36-leaf versions. The following facts can be found through comparison of jeonju edition Sodaesong- jeon. The 43-leaf version, currently recognized as a representative work, cannot take the position of Seonbon among the Jeonju editions. The process of transforming from a 34-leaf version through a 36-leaf version to a 43-leaf version should be recognized. Only by actively utilizing the 40-leaf version can a correct understanding of the Jeonju edition Sodaeseong-jeon be reached. Therefore, if we look only at jeonju edition Sodaeseong-jeon, I thought we need integrated text of jeonju edition for now. However, if the scope is extended to the entire Sodaesong-jeon, Jeonju edition is likely to fail to play the role of Seonbon, because it creates integrated text due to its basic nature as woodblock print. Therefore, in future Sodaeseong-jeon studies, it is necessary to identify the original version among many manuscripts.
