<소대성전> 원본계열 설정의 가능성과 의미 - 연세대 소장 필사본 78장본을 중심으로

Abstract

<소대성전>은 한국 고소설을 이해하는 데 있어서 중요한 기준이 되는 작품이다. 비록 작자가 밝혀져 있지는 않지만, 작품과 관련된 기록이 풍부해서 1794년 이전에 한글 소설로 존재했다는 것을 확실히 알 수 있다. 또한 소대성 낮잠자기라는 속담이 전하고 있고, 연작 <용문전>이 존재하며, 개작 <낙성비룡>이 존재하고 있어 18세기 후반 이후 굉장히 인기 있던 작품이었음을 알 수 있다. 오랜 기간 인기를 유지했던 작품이었기 때문에 이본도 많이 남아있는데, 방각본, 필사본(세책본, 한문본 포함), 활판본 등을 모두 합치면 100종이 넘는다. 그러나 작품의 중요성 및 이본의 다양성에 비하여 이 작품의 이본 연구는 별로 진행되지 않았다. 기존의 이본 연구에서는 <소대성전> 이본들을 크게 경판계열과 완판계열로 나누어 설명하는 것이 일반적이었다. 최근에는 이를 좀더 세분화하여 A계통(경판계열)과 B계통(완판계열)의 이본들에서 필요한 부분을 선택적으로 수용하여 형성된 이본들을 새로운 계열(C계통)로 묶기도 하였다. 이 논문에서는 연세대 소장 필사본 78장본에 주목했다. 연세대본은 기존의 연구에서 경판계열에서 완판계열로 변화하는 중간에 나타난 작품이라고 설명하거나, A계통과 B계통이 형성된 이후 나타난 작품이라고 설명된 이본이다. 그러나 연세대본을 경판 36장본, 완판 40장본과 자세하게 비교해본 결과 경판 36장본이 확장되어 연세대본이 형성된 것이 아니었고, 경판 36장본과 완판 40장본을 적절하게 조합해서 연세대본이 완성된 것도 아니었다. 연세대본은 경판본과 완판본이 형성되기 이전에 출현한 이본과 관계됨을 알 수 있었고, 이러한 성격의 이본들을 <소대성전> ‘원본계열’이라고 분류할 필요가 있다고 판단하였다. <소대성전> 원본계열은 경판계열과 완판계열이 형성되기 이전의 <소대성전>의 상태를 추정할 수 있는 이본이다. 따라서 기존에 완판 43장본을 중심으로 교육과 연구가 진행되던 관행에서 탈피해, 연세대본과 같은 원본계열의 이본들을 대상으로 감상하고 교육하며 연구해야 <소대성전>에 대한 보다 합리적인 이해에 도달할 수 있을 것이다.

Sodaeseong-jeon is an important standard in understanding Korean old novel. Although the author has not been identified, there is a lot of work-related records to prove that Sodaeseong-jeon existed as a Korean-letter novel before 1794. Since it has been popular for a long time, there are many versions left, including the woodblock-print version, the manuscript version (including lending library book, Chinese translated books), and printed version. However, the study on version has not been studied very much compared to the importance of this work and the variety of the version. In previous studies, it was common to describe that Sodaeseong-jeon largely divided to Seoul-version type and Jeonju-version type. Recently, it was further subdivided into new type(C type), has the mid-range features of a A type(Seoul-version type) and B type(Jeonju-version type). I focused on the 78-sheet manuscript of Yonsei University's. In previous studies, this manuscript is explained as the work appeared in the middle of the transition from the Seoul-version to Jeonju-version, or appeared after the A type and B type were formed. However, after detailed comparing the Yonsei University version with the Seoul 36-leaf edition and the Jeonju 40-leaf edition, I knew that the Yonsei version was not expanded form the 36 edition, and the Yonsei version was not completed by combining the 36 edition and 40 edition appropriately. The Yonsei University vesion was able to recognize that it had appeared before the Seoul version and Jeonju version, and decided that it was necessary to classify the models of this nature as "Original type." of Sodaeseong-jeon. Through this original type, We can see the status before the Seoul type and Jeonju type appeared. Therefore, it is only possible to learn, educate, and study the original type like Yonsei University version in order to reach a more reasonable understanding of Sodaeseong-jeon.
