Abstract
In this paper, we examine whether there are linguistic phenomena that can be handled as synonymy among the phenomena which have been handled as alternations. The alternation and the synonymy seem to be unrelated, but they are closely related in that two grammatical units must be synonymous in order for them to be treated as variants. If the grammatical units are completely different from each other in meaning, they must belong to a separate morpheme or lexeme. Therefore, it can be said that the synonymy is a necessary condition to decide the alternation. The alternation by semantic, stylistic, and pragmatic conditions could be handled in the framework of synonymy. Therefore, it can be said that it is not necessary to assume these conditions as conditions of alternation. Putting these conditions into the conditions of alternation will lay a burden on language description because many synonyms have to be described as variants. Discussions related to the abbreviations and doublets also can be related to alternation. In this paper, it is proposed that the abbreviations based on the optional phonological rules are surface forms of the same lexeme, the other abbreviations forms synonymy with their original forms. Doublets should be regarded as the words belonging to the separate lexical items.
