- Abstract
- This paper examines film and other aspects of contemporary culture to propose an exploitative, profit-driven “logic of capitalism” that stands in opposition to the “logic of God” as expressed by Christianity and other major world religions. This “logic of capitalism” is harmful to humanity and the natural world not only for the individual instances of abuse and degradation that it routinely visits upon humanity and the natural world, but more dangerously in the fact that its proponents have created an air of inevitability around a tacit but all-pervasive belief system that can only conceive of good in economic terms. The paper concludes by suggesting that all religious people should reject what Pope Francis terms “the deified market” and faithfully follow their faith traditions in working towards an inter-relational paradigm that respects community, justice, and the natural world.
