『(신･)고질라』 담론에 나타나는 국민국가론의 자폐성 비판

Abstract

『신고질라』는 개봉 이후 하나의 거대한 담론장을 형성해 왔으며, 이것은 ‘재해와 자국방위’에 대한 일본인들의 의견을 정리한다는 의미를 가진다. 이 중에서 ‘고질라=일본군영령’설이 강하게 나타나며, 그에는 1990년대 가토 노리히로의 영향력을 볼 수 있다. 이를 ‘외부자의 시선’으로 검토하였다. 이 영화는 서사적으로 볼 때, 재해, 전후 일본과 미국의 관계 및 자위대 문제, 일본정부의 위기극복 시스템, 해결되지 않는 결론으로 이야기가 전개되어 간다. 그에 따라 담론도, 재해와 전쟁, 재해와 자위대, 고질라=영령설, 일본정부에 대한 환상, 본토결전의 욕망, 미완의 파시즘이 구현된 영화 등으로 전개된다. 이 현재적 담론은 1990년대 『고질라』 담론과 깊은 관련을 맺고 있다. 1990년대 담론에서 가와모토 사부로가 가해의식을 바탕으로 피해의식도 포함하는 당시의 가장 공적인 의견을 대변했다면, 아카사카 노리오는 일본 전후의 모순을 천황제에서 보는 의견을 투사한다. 그리고 사토 겐지의 주장은 타자의 목소리에 대한 응답이라는 맥락에 위치하는 것이다. 이러한 주장들과는 다르게 가장 영향력이 컸던 가토 노리히로의 주장은 고질라를 ‘내셔널 아이덴티티’ 논의로 귀결시키는 것이었다. 가토 노리히로는 『신고질라』에 대해 ‘덴츠’ 문화 속에서 당대의 금기에 도전하는 영화로 규정하는 데, 그것은 현재 횡행하고 있는 배타적 내셔널리즘에 대한 영합이라고 생각된다. 가토의 논의를 통해 알 수 있는 사실은, 고질라가 다층적 문화 표상이라는 해석에서 내셔널 아이덴티티 구축이라는 협소한 방향으로 수렴되는 과정을 보여준다. 또한 그것은 국민주체를 형성하는 과정에서 타자에 대한 인식이 삭제되고, 미국과 일본 만의 관계로 닫혀지는 ‘내셔널 아이덴티티’(National Identity)의 자폐구조라고 할 수 있다.

Shin Godzilla has given rise to widespread discourse in Japan since its release. They have shown the Japanese people's views on disasters and national defense. Among them, the argument for “Godzilla = Japanese military spirit” is strongly expressed, from which we can see the impact of Norihiro Gato's argument in the 1990s. This paper reviewed his argument from the perspective of “others.” In the discourse of Godzilla in the 1990s, Saburo Kawamoto represented most of the public opinion at the time, which was based on the perpetrator’s view of history including that of victims of the Japanese. Norio Akasaka offered his opinion on the contradictions of post-war Japan in the Ten'nōsei. Kenji Sato's argument could be considered as a response to the voice of “others.” Unlike these claims, Norihiro Kato's claim settled the meaning of Godzilla in the form of the national identity of Japan. Kato says Shin Godzilla challenges contemporary taboos in “Dentsu(電通)” culture, which means the limitations of popular culture in capitalism. This paper argued that such an idea was flattery to the current prevailing nationalism. Based on the review of Kato's discussions, we can say it shows the process of narrow convergence of interpretations from Godzilla’s being a multi-layered cultural symbol to national identity of Japan; in the desire of forming national identity, the recognition of others is deleted, and only remains as a cognitive autistic structure between America and Japan.
