김유정의 「두포전」과 동아시아 아기장수 설화

Abstract

「두포전」은 아기장수 설화를 소설화한 첫 작품으로 김유정 사후에 『소년』에 발표된 것이다. 일제 말기의 죽어가는 식민지 작가가 쓴 이야기를 전시체제의 식민지 아동들이 읽었다는 점에서 「두포전」에는 김유정을 비롯한 식민지 민중의 절박함이 배어 있다. 이 연구는 「두포전」의 인물과 중심사건을 동아시아 아기장수 설화와 비교하여 그 변용의 원인과 의미를 당대 사회 및 작가의 상황을 고려하여 탐구하였다. 「두포전」의 두포는 한국의 아기장수와 달리, 양육자와 성장 시간이 확보돼 행복한 결말을 맞이하지만 일본, 몽골의 아기장수와 비교할 때 독특한 양상이 보인다. 적대자에 대한 인물의 행동 방식이 방어적이고, 인물에게 인내력이 요구된다. 그 이유는 근본적으로 두포가 ‘은신형 인물’인 데서 찾을 수 있다. 일본과 몽골의 아기장수들은 모두 집을 떠나 다른 공간에서 외부의 적이나 권력자와 대결하여 승리한다. 하지만 두포는 적대자를 피해 은신한 곳에서 그의 능력을 시샘한 마을 사람들에게 괴롭힘을 당한다. 이러한 설정은 살해자가 곧 피해자였던 한국의 아기장수 설화와 유사하다. 김유정은 「두포전」을 통해 한국 아기장수 설화의 비극성을 극복하고자 한 것으로 보이며, 그를 위해 하늘(조력자)의 기능을 강화하고 두포의 신분을 태자로 변형한 것으로 보인다. 「두포전」은 일제 말기 식민지 작가가 극한의 시련을 표현한 한 방식으로 볼 수 있다. 자기 능력을 맘껏 발휘할 수 없는 은신의 상황에서 장수에게 가장 요구되는 것은 시간을 견디는 힘이다. 그리고 인간이 한계 상황에서 마주하는 판타지는 하늘의 도움이다. 김유정이 「두포전」에서 구현하는 천벌, 천우 모티프가 바로 그러한 천우 판타지라 할 것이다. 그리고 이 판타지는 1939년, 이 소설을 읽는 아동들에게도 유효했다고 본다.

“Dupojeon” was the first work by Kim Yoo-jung to fictionalize a baby hero story. After his death, the novel was published in <소년>, a juvenile magazine. This study aims to compare the characters and main events of Dupojeon with those of Eastern Asian baby hero stories and explore the cause and meaning of variation while considering the contemporaneous social conditions and writer`s circumstances. Unlike typical baby heroes in Korean folklore, Dupo in Dupojeon experiences a positive ending as a result of securing both an upbringer and time to mature. Moreover, in contrast with Japanese and Mongolian baby heroses, he exhibits unique characteristics. His response to the antagonist is surprisingly defensive and he exhibits more patience than is typical of his character type. This is essentially due to Dupo’s characterization as a “hidden figure”. Leaving his home and confronting external and powerful enemies, most baby heroes in Japanese and Mongolian stories win outside their homes. However, Dupo is harassed by villagers in a secluded area to avoid enemies. This setting is in line with the story of a Korean baby hero whose killer had a common enemy with him. “Dupojeon” can be seen as a means with which a colonial writer expresseed his extreme ordeal at the end of Japanese colonial rule. The fantasy that humans experience in distressing situations is that of Heaven's Help. Divine punishment, embodied by Kim Yoo-jung in “Dupojeon”, functions as a Heaven`s Help fantasy.
