- Abstract
- In the 1930s, Northeast China’s authors portrayed various figures based on the special historical and cultural background of the Northeast China’s region. Among them, the bandits were one of the most remarkable ones. Most bandits, which appeared in the literature of Northeast China’s writers at the time, were people who abandoned a farmer’s life and their hometowns for several different reasons. They were a group of people who lived in distant mountains and other remote places based on their armed forces. It is remarkable that the number of bandits in the Northeast China’s area increased rapidly from the 1930s to the 1940s, reflecting the special social and cultural phenomenon of the Northeast China’s region at that time. Indeed, the increase in the number of bandits and activity in China’s Northeast region is related to political, economic, and social problems that existed within Northeast China’s community at the time, beyond any simple and temporary social phenomenon. Reflecting this reality, we can easily notice thata type of bandit appeared very frequently in the works of Northeast China’s authors. Therefore, it can be stated that a research on a change of bandits’image appearing in the literature of the Northeast China’s authors is quite important to help understand the cultural and social problems of the region at the time, as well as to help analyze and examine the bandits’ profile. Based on the consciousness of this problem, this paper contemplates the differences between the bandits’ image appearing in the literature of China’s Northeast authors during the period of the occupation (1931-1945) and the literature of earlier periods. At the same time, this paper attempts to elaborate on the reasons that caused this change and the cultural significance it had in Northeast China’s region.
