민주주의적 모성: 벤자민 스팍의 『육아상식』과 민주주의적 이상

Abstract

1945년 2차 세계대전 이후 미국사회는 전례 없는 풍요로움과 민주주의에 대한 위협이라는 모순된 공존이 시작되는 냉전시기를 맞게 된다. 더욱 건강하고 안정된 사회를 재건하기 위해 이전과는 다른 방식으로 시민이 될 아이들을 키워낼 필요성을 더욱 자각하게 되었다. 미국의 국민 육아 전문 의사였던 벤자민 스팍은 그의 저서 『육아상식』에서 더욱 안전하고 민주주의적인 미국사회를 지향하였다. 그 스스로 『육아상식』에서 탈권위주의적이고 친근한 태도를 견지하면서 그의 책을 읽는 엄마(부모)들의 열렬한 지지를 받는다. 하지만 민주주의적 이상의 실현의 선봉에 설 엄마는 정신적으로 건강하고, 감정적으로 성숙할 것을 요구받는다. 이를 위해서는 아이와 자기 자신을 끊임없이 관찰하며 아이의 발달단계와 변화에 적절한 대처를 할 수 있어야함을 스팍은 강조하였다. 하지만 이런 스팍의 조언은 후에 페미니스트들의 비판을 받는다. 이 글에서는 스팍의 육아방식에 드러난 민주주의적 요소를 살펴봄으로써 그가 민주주의적 양육을 어떻게 규정하고 있는지, 그 과정을 통해 엄마의 역할이 어떻게 규정되었는지를 살펴본다.

This paper examines the concept of democratic motherhood, shaped during the Postwar era, which highly influenced the family dynamic and the concept of motherhood. In the realm of childrearing in the mid-twentieth century America, how to raise a healthy and democratic citizen gained significance. Thus, the role of mother became indispensable for the process of child care. Mother should be psychologically healthy and emotionally mature by learning how to react to the development of their own child. With a special attention to Benjamin Spock's The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care and his advice, this paper aims to delve how Spock defined democratic values in the process of child care and how he advised to inculcate these values into the relationship between mother and child.
