한국인 국가정체성의 정치심리학

Abstract

이 연구는 한국인 국가정체성 현 실태를 파악하고 통일 이후 재정립 상황을 대비하고자 국민 기준과 범위에 대한 선호와 그 원천, 그리고 국가정체성 인식과 애국심, 통일국가상, 사회적 거리감 등 정치심리적 태도와의 관계를 분석했다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 40대 이하 세대에서는 귀속적 요소가 강한 인종정체성보다 자발적 요소로 구성된 시민정체성을 더 중요하게 생각하는 경향이 존재했다. 둘째, 현재 한국인이 인식하고 있는 국가정체성은 다른 나라들과 달리 경험적으로 하나의 차원으로 구성되어 있을 가능성이 높다. 셋째, 보수성, 권위주의, 안전 가치 선호 성향 등이 독립적으로 국가정체성을 중요하게여기게 하는 요인으로 부각되었다. 넷째, 시민정체성은 민족 중심의 통일국가상에 대한 낮은 지지와 관련이 있지만, 대안적 통일국가상을 지지하게 하는 데에이르고 있지는 않다. 다섯째, 시민정체성 선호는 상징적 애국심을 높이는 결과가 나타났고, 인종정체성은 역사에 대한 자부심을 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 인종정체성이 시민정체성과 달리 이주자에 대한 사회적 거리감을 높이고 있으며 이는 북한주민과 중국동포에게도 예외 없이 적용되는 것으로 보인다.

This paper examines the psychological sources of current Korean national identity and explores its implications for such political attitudes as patriotism, preference for the image of a unified Korea, and social distance, using a nationally representative survey dataset. Firstly, the study finds that Koreans of 40 years old or younger perceive the elements of civic identity more importantly than those of ethnic identity compared to older Koreans. Secondly, exploratory factor analysis shows, however, there is one underlying dimension for Korean national identity as opposed to citizens of other countries, which may reflect the fact that Korea has been a rare mono-national state. Thirdly, the results also demonstrate that such personality variables as conservatism, authoritarian personality, and security value tend to lead to more recognition on national identity. Forthly, preference on civic identity leads to lower support for reunification based on Korean ethnicity, while it does not lead to support on an alternative image of a unified state. Fifthly, the study shows that preference on civic identity also increases symbolic patriotism while ethnic identity increases the pride in national history. Finally the result demonstrates that preference on ethnic identity unlike civic identity, also increases social distance toward various immigrant groups including North Koreans and Chinese Koreans.
