Abstract
The aims of this study are to reinterpret the transparency of architectural works of Jean Nouvel and Kazuyo Sejima and to suggest new possibility for the expression of "visual lightness" in exhibition unit space design. In order to develop the transfigured form by understanding architectural concept and limitation of materiality in architectural tectonics, lightness of materiality were experimented with translucent materials and organizing unit spaces in various methods. The expression of lightness in unit exhibition spaces were to be simplified by abstraction with the see-through materials, such as wire meshes. The exhibition units space experiments went in two folds; for the first one, the lightness of materiality and visual transparency were being mixed and making a new kind of see-through exhibition space was possible, for the second one, when more than two wire mesh materials are overlapped by box-in-box strategy, double sights and moire effects for some new types of virtuality were to be found. Therefore, the new aspect of actuality by see-through materiality were shown by these design experiments and also, the conceptual thought that is beyond material existence, were introduced. Briefly speaking, this study is meaningful in the sense that sensibility of constructive materials of exhibition space have been experimented with ‘material transparency' and ‘material lightness', and that it suggests the possibility of new expression for the ‘lightness' in relation with contemporary architectural design concepts on transparency.
