Abstract
This article was to read ≪Spring(봄)≫ of Lee Gi Young(이기영) as a narrative of self-formation.’ which is based on the pursuit of self-identity. This article is foused to examine the way how Lee Gi Young problematize childhood life in a dialectical relationship between the cognitive structure and the emotive structure of ≪Spring≫. Particularly divisive voice of the author in≪Spring≫noted that reveals the hidden desires of the author. Based on this fact, it sought to examine the relationship between the authors's desire implied in ≪Spring≫and self-identity. Issues discussed in this article can be summarized as follows. First, in the level of the cognitive structure the narrative of≪Spring≫, which problematize the process of awakening for the modern world of rural boy, Seok Lim(석림), is structured by Enlightenment ideals, which is based on the otherness’ rhetoric of dichotomous opposition of light and darkness, civilization and barbarism, bloom and maintenance ect. So, paradoxically ≪Spring≫lays the ideological effects to justify the colonial discourse of the Restoration in Japan. Second, in contrast the narrative of≪Spring≫in the level of the emotive structure, ultimately implies the desire of the author, Lee Gy Young towards pre-modern rural community, ‘bangkkeul’ which referred to ‘village people(民村)’. This desire of the author are indirectly projected onto the idyllic landscapes depicting and the traditional customs like Chuseok(추석).
