- Abstract
- This paper aims to discuss ways in which Korean ancient harvest festivals and traditional dance are described in official history of China. Chinese official history books cited by Korean researchers are mainly restricted to Hou Han Shu and San Guo Zhi. This is because Hou Han Shu and San Guo Zhi have detailed descriptions of ancient Korean history which are not covered by Korean history books. It should be noticed that there are records of Korean ancient harvest festivals and traditional dance in Chinese official history published after Dongyi Liezhuan of Hou Han Shu and Dongyi Zhuan of San Guo Zhi. However, the importance of those records are underestimated in the preceding studies of traditional Korean dance. Most of descriptions in 25 Chinese official history books are based on Dongyi Liezhuan of Hou Han Shu and Dongyi Zhuan of San Guo Zhi. However, the fact that Dongmaeng, harvest festivals of Goguryeo, was called Dongmeong and that there were dancing and singing at funeral ritual, can be found in those Chinese official history published after San Guo Zhi. Additionally, the records about Baekje and Shilla does not exist in Hou Han Shu and San Guo Zhi. Records about dances of Baekje and Shilla are written in Chinese official history books published after Choushu. Those records should be used as supplementary materials in studying dances of Baekje and Shilla.
