- Abstract
- This paper aims to go over the former studies regarding the system of complex sentence in Korean, and to propose a complemented system. Especially, it is focused on investigating the system of conjunctive sentence in regard to adverbial clauses. This paper can be summed up as the following :
(1) It is not adequate to explain conjunctive sentences by the view of reductive transformation. The definition of conjunction must be widened. The meaning of conjunction, like the opinion of Choi, Hyen-bae(1971), is just to connect a word with a word, a phrase with a phrase, and a clause with a clause.
(2) Subordinate conjunctive clauses are not embedded clauses but just conjunctive clauses.
(3) ‘-key’ is an adverbial ending.
(4) The existence of adverbial clause must be accepted in the system of complex sentence in Korean. In addition, conjunctive sentences must be considered to include both coordinate and subordinate clauses. In a conjunctive sentence, the connection of V and V, VP and VP, IP and IP are acceptable. The difference between coordinate and subordinate clause is that category-changing rule is applied to subordinate clauses. And ‘-key’, ‘-torok’, ‘-tusi’ can be accepted as adverbial endings.
