- Abstract
- Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the elderly patient. It is characterized by multiple cognitive deficits and is often accompanied by behavioral disturbance and mood changes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate contents of prescription and takes a guideline on therapeutics of dementia. This retrospective study was conducted on patients diagnosed with dementia at Korea University Medical Center Anam and Guro Hospitals from January 2001 to July 2003. There were total of 144 patients: 54 patients with vascular dementia and 90 with Alzheimer's disease. Twenty-seven cases of vascular dementia were treated with antihypertensive agents and 24 with central nervous system (CNS) agents, in combination with acetyl- L-carnitine (ALC); 13 cases of vascular dementia with antihypertensive agents and 12 with CNS agents, combined with donepezil·HCl. Ten cases of Alzheimer's disease received antihypertensive agents and 106 with CNS agents, combined with donepezil·HCl. The most prescribed agent was amlodipine besylate (15 cases) in vascular dementia and risperidone (24 cases) in Alzheimer's disease.
