- Abstract
- Kim Dong-ri’s Novel <Eul-hwa> is important to understand Kim Dong-ri’s authorship in his literay life. He had wished to write novel resisting the occidental modernity in Korean modern literature history. To accomplish that goal, he tried to write a full-length novel like <Eul-hwa>(1978) in his later life. In this paper, I tried to interpretate this problem, focusing on analyzing the charactersization of <Eul-hwa> and <Munyeodo>. First of all, I investigated the Kim Dong-ri’s genre consciousness of modern novel. He knew the essence of modern novel exactly. So his knowledge about novel can be transferred to the desire of writing full-length novel in his literary life. <Eul-hwa> is the result of it. In <Eul-hwa>, I found three features of figuring characters of modern individuals, ‘Eul-hwa’ and ‘Young-sool’. First, the inner minds of characters are generated. Second, the historicity of characters’ actions. Third, the language of relational desires. These features can be explained as the modernity of novel. But these features are not satisfactory to regard <Eul-hwa> as a full-length novel. The causes of that problem arise out of the self-contradiction between a desire to write a full-length modern novel and a desire to figure modern individuals in a novel. Self-contradicting two desires to write modern novel, also Kim Dong-ri’s concrete literary beliefs, resulted in an unsuccessfulness of <Eul-hwa>.
