Abstract
Acccording to Colin Crouch, while the forms of democracy remain fully in place and actually strengthened, politics and government are increasingly slipping back into the control of privileged elites in the manner characteristic of pre-democratic times. He names this crisis of parliamentary democracy in capitalist globalization "post-democracy." The key institution of post-democracy is the global corporations. Corporate-dominated media system has become the powerful bulwarks of global capitalism. The development of global commercial media has been crucial to the development of global marketplace. The political consequence of economic globalization is the crisis of democratic representation. The main thesis of this article is that overcoming the current worldwide situation of post-democracy requires media democratization which means the establishment of independent, autonomous, and participatory media. It comprises efforts to protect and consolidate the values of access, participation, pluralism, representative diversity and equality in public communication. The main components of this democratic media activism are a participatory public sphere and civic literacy.
