Abstract
This study discusses proficiency of international students in Korean universities. 35 Chinese students participated in reading proficiency test and responded to various survey questions. Testing materials developed by ‘Nat-Mal(낱말; a word) Research Institute’ was used. Several findings are as follows. First, subject students exhibited uneven levels of reading proficiency even though they had similar learning period. Second, international students had more difficulty in understanding educational textbooks than general publications. Third, analysis proved that 'critical thinking' is the most difficult area to be developed by international students. Fourth, depending on academic fields, students were found to have different thinking power. At texts of humanity, participants scored highest in descriptive ability. At texts of social sciences and natural sciences, participants scored poorly in thinking power. Fifth, there exist relationship between LQ and thinking power categories. The most efficient way to increase reading proficiency is to expose students variety of reading materials.
