- Abstract
- The urban civil class which was formulated by the development of urban economy in the Sung Dynasty created its own peculiar tea-culture in the city life. It is the very tea-salon where the citizens exchanged their friendship, their social relationships and their commercial benefits through trade.
It is assumed that while the archtype of the tea-salon was originated in the Tang dynasty, it was emerged in the large scale in the Sung dynasty when the system of city charter was destroyed and the commercial trade was very active. The tea-salon in the Sung dynasty was popular in the city and the country. The managements and activities of tea-salon had a great impact on the daily social life in myriad ways.
With the special reference to Tung-ching meng-hua lu (東京夢華錄) and Chih-ch‘ing tsa-shuo (摭靑雜說), it can be argued that there was some prosperity of tea-salon and high business morality of its owner in the city of Kai-feng which is the most modernized city of the Northern Sung dynasty.
