Abstract
For Korean college students, yearbook photo taking is one of the events which require time and efforts for makeover. This study aims to observe the fashion styling and image making reflected on a women’s university yearbook in Seoul from 1982 to 2016, and investigate the fashion images of Korean college students for the last 36 years. For such purposes, 18 books (every other year) were collected, 50 photographs were randomly selected from each, and the total of 900 photographs analyzed. The line, details, color of the fashion items clad were frequency analyzed, and the fashion images were content analyzed and compared with chi-squared distribution method. For coordination, solid color two-piece dresses were the most favored item, followed by two-piece ensemble, jacket and one-piece dresses. The hemlines and lines of the skirt/pants showed the reflection of the trends; wide pants suits were favored in 1998 and 2000, while miniskirts were frequent in 1996, 2012, and 2016, for example. Fashion images reflected on the yearbook photographs fashion were minimal/classic(n=676, 75.1%), romantic/feminine(n=106, 11.8%), and modern/mannish(n=81, 9.0%). The minimal/classic and romantic/feminine images were pursued pretty evenly, while modern/mannish image were favored in 1998 and 2000. Waist-length jacket and tight knee-length skirt were the main items for the minimal/classic image. Romantic/feminine images of blouse and skirt ensemble were especially favored in 1984, 1986, 2008-2012. Pant-suited modern/mannish images were mostly straight silhouetted. Yearbook fashions were the reflection of the fashion trend and fashion images of Korean college students.
