Abstract
Market society is a society dominated by exchange value. Market plays a primary role in contemporary society in reorganizing our resources of life, not only economic resources but also intellectual and emotional resources. On the other hand, general human capacity to develop the ability of thinking and feeling and responding is rapidly marginalized. With all the formal elements of democratic polity, our community is gradually losing the conditions to make its people autonomous and mature beings. If the capacity for participation is the central process of democratization, ordinary people in contemporary society have been blocked and excluded from the process of participation in a very systematic way. They are shut off from the process of creation of communal meanings which are shared by the members of community. A democratic society involves the active participation of its citizens, which in turn requires that the citizens be informed so that they can intelligently participate in the events and issues of the day. Overcoming the crisis of democracy, thus, requires media institutions committed to democratic debate, articulation of a variety of views and voices, and access to a wide range of citizens. Critical media literacy, as a part of cultural literacy, is concerned with the transformation of the conditions of media production. Critical media pedagogy involves teaching how to resist media manipulation as well as learning to create their own meanings more actively. This paper examines how critical media literacy can help produce new forms of media that will make people autonomous and mature beings.
