심미성을 상호작용 속에서 이해하라: HCI에서 미학의 방법론을 적용하려는 연구 경향에 관해

Abstract

오늘날 HCI 연구 분야에서 상호작용 주체의 경험(소위 사용자 경험)은 다양한 HCI 인공물들을 통해 점차 일상생활에서 구체적으로 실현되고 있으며 이제 단순한 관심의 차원을 넘어 그 중요성이 심각하게 평가되고 있다. 일상생활은 경험의 개인적 측면, 취향이 소비되고 교환되는 장소이며, 이를 구현하는 산물들에 의해 다시금 문화적으로 재생산되는 장소이다. 이와 관련해서 일상세계에서의 경험을 구성하려는 HCI연구에서 미학은 중요한 방법론을 제시할 수 있다. 본 논문은 HCI연구와 미학의 관련성을 위한 이론적 배경을 밝히고, 최근 HCI연구에서 미학의 방법론을 적용한 연구경향들을 분석한다. 이를 효과적으로 성취하기 위해 이 경향들을 ``환원주의적 연구 패러다임``과 ``전일론적 연구 패러다임``으로 구분한다. 또한 이 두 가지 패러다임을 근거로 세 가지 접근 방법을 분석한다. 즉, ``환원주의적인 미학적 접근법``, ``프래그머티즘 미학의 접근법``, ``인터랙션 비평의 접근법``이 그것이다. 이 방법들은 미학의 영역에서는 이미 보편화되어 있으며, 따라서 HCI연구에 적용할 경우 충분한 타당성을 지닌다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 이 세 가지 입장의 장단점을 비판적으로 살필 것이며, 이를 통해 컴퓨터과학-공학을 토대로 한 HCI 연구와 인문학을 토대로 한 미학의 연구가 체계적으로 만날 수 있는지를 확인할 수 있는 시야를 제공할 것이다.

On HCI research field, ``the experience`` of interaction with computer(so called, ``user experience``) is not just a ``buzz word`` of late. But it has become a core issue of the research. His/her experiences might be considered parts of daily life through many different interaction artifacts. Everyday life is a place where personal experiences are consumed and exchanged with their concrete products(like images, desires, etc.) and the products are reproduced culturally. Through the interaction as cultural action in everyday life HCI researches need the approaches of Aesthetics. This paper explains inevitability of the relationship between HCI and aesthetics, and provides an overview of researches trend that apply approaches of aesthetics in HCI with two paradigms: reductionist research paradigm and holistic research paradigm. And the paper analyse the three approaches of the two: reductionist aesthetic approaches, approaches of pragmatist aesthetics, and interaction criticism. These approaches are considered to be traditional methods of aesthetics and useful in understanding aesthetic experiences of HCI. Finally the paper compares their strengths and weaknesses critically. Eventually, the research provides a thread for a systematic relationship between HCI of computer science and engineering and aesthetics of humanity science.
