- Abstract
- Utilization of MT in Translation Classroom Kim, Soon Mi (Sookmyung Women's University) With budget-constrained business clients increasingly turn to machine translation(MT), and the volume of web-contents requiring translation grows exponentially, the needs for pre-editing and post-editing of texts for machine translation increase rapidly. Viewing this environment as an opportunity to embrace translation related technology and expand the scope of translation and interpreting, this study aims to investigate the educational implication of introducing Neutral Machine Translation(NMT) into translation training at the undergraduate level. In this study, 30 students taking Korean into English translation course are given translation assignments and asked to use NMT such as Google Translate and Naver's Papago. In this process, students did pre-editing of the source text to remove ambiguity and simplify structure and post-editing of the MT output to remove both semantic and linguistic errors. The analysis of the students’ comments and translation process shows a potential for the usage of MT in the undergraduate translation education.
