- Abstract
- This paper presents how a creative dance program is an effective way to increase self-esteem and emotional expression of elementary students as well as improving sociality. A dance education as a part of an art course helps to increase the level of one’ physical, emotional, and social development as well as cultural understandings. In addition, it aids on better knowledge on artful requirements for free expression and thoughts. Thus having an experience on dancing is very important for early intervention on a whole personality education. The sample population consists on higher grade (4, 5, and 6 grades) students from Y elementary school in Gyongi-do Yongin-si. We have picked 24 students for the experimental group in which 12 people are in the target group and the other 12 people alternative group. All of them have never been professionally trained on dance and have no physical and mental handicaps. The target group has trained 100 minutes in the creative dance class once a week for 12 weeks. The alternative group has never got any dance programs.
We analyze the data from before- and after- dance class of the target group using the paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. Also we have analyzed the difference of the target group and the non-trained alternative group using the same methods. We have reached the following results from the test of hypothesis using a 95 % of confidence interval.
First we have found that there is a statistically significant difference on emotional expression from the target group before- and after- the dance class but there is no difference on the same subject from the alternative group. Second the dance program results on a significant difference for sociality development from the target group but it has no significant effect on the alternative group. Third there is a significantly positive effect on the self-esteem of the target group after taking the dance program but no effect in the alternative group.
We conclude that the creative dance program helps primary school age students to have a positive development on sociality, emotional expression, and self-esteem.
